“What struck me initially about Nugget’s beat was the simplicity and peacefulness of it. It felt like a moment of repose and stasis, which I often associate musically with a lullaby. So I wrote a simple melody using a scale commonly found in Balinese gamelan, which I harmonized and sang, along with my 10-year old daughter Clara. In a nod to Duke Ellington’s “pep section,” I juxtaposed the angelic voices against three trumpets in plunger mute, which gives that “ow, wah” effect. Underneath all of this, I played a low, pedal tone on flugelhorn, also using a plunger mute, to achieve a slow “wah,” like a bullfrog. – Taylor Barnett
