LYRICS Code Beats! Yeah! Welcome everybody please take your seats We're at the corner where music and technology meet. Computer coding, an introduction Learning by working on musical production. Light the stove, turn the heat up Write the code, cook a beat up. It's not plain this is deluxe programmin' and we're jammin' and we're gettin' to the crux. Stay focused on a coding mission Break it down into parts like an algorithm. Whether up tempo or a slow jam In the process learning how to program. Music and code: might see resemblance, This funky beat I'm rockin' to is the evidence. Making full use of technology, gotta be creative, innovative, that's the policy. I wrote a song about it, and there it go If you didn't know before, well now you know.

LYRICS Computer science might’ve had an interest but they hesitated Maybe everything was just too complicated. Or else maybe they thought it was boring, Either way they didn’t think that it was worth exploring. You can get with the program, Code beats, make jams! This is the way we simplify the complex, Put concepts like loops in context. Coding can be intimidating, not always inviting Code Beats, making it a little more exciting. Who would’ve thought, you can make songs with Python And make a difference and have impact like icons. Take what’s usually a calm, quiet activity, Turn it into beats for everyone in the vicinity to Listen to, become a fan, pump up the jam, Created by computing and executing commands! You can get with the program, Code beats, make jams! Music and tech, this is the crossroads Like a wise man told me: “Everybody gotta have a code.”

about

THE CONCEPT
This album is a creative collaboration between middle school participants in the Code Beats Summer 2021 program, VCUarts Music and VCU Engineering Computer Science Faculty and students, and Grammy-nominated producer (and VCUarts Music alumnus) DJ Harrison.

THE PROCESS
Each beat began as a computer programming activity in TunePad, an online platform for creating music with the Python programming language. The middle school participants in Code Beats Summer 2021 program voted on their “Top 10” favorite student beats and this computer-coded music was then recreated by the Grammy-nominated producer and multi-instrumentalist Devonne Harris a.k.a. “DJ Harrison,” who faithfully reproduced the student beats at his Jellowstone Studio.

VCUarts Music students and faculty then took these DJ Harrison-produced stereo mixes and produced an original creative work, layering in additional instruments–often manipulating the original track as well–and otherwise expanded these into fully-realized, one-minute miniatures.

Two of the tracks feature International Hip Hop artist & educator Dumi Right, who contributed original lyrics that lay out exactly what Code Beats is all about: unlocking student creativity and confidence in computer science, through great music!
